Reality of the California Marijuana Market

2023.03.24

In Japan, people say there is a ‘global green rush’, but I don’t think it is easy to get real and vivid news about this topic for now, including the reality of marijuana’s business, so I would like to describe a little about the actual situation.

As said in previous articles, Japan is not very familiar with marijuana, but the CBD industry is growing.

So I thought I would write an article about some of the things that people should know about marijuana.

Last year just in San Bernardino County, Calif. (a county located in the southern part of the U.S. state of California in a desert area famous for its marijuana production), law enforcement authorities have identified nearly 1,100 illegal cultivation sites and and more than 8,600 illegal greenhouses leading to arrests.

This includes over 1.4 million marijuana plants and 97 tons of processed marijuana, 175 pounds of concentrated marijuana, including an estimated value of more than $1 billion (more than 140 billion yen in today’s Japanese yen).

Illegal indoor grown marijuana is even sometimes sold for twice the price of outdoor-grown products.

【MOST IMPORTANT THING TO KNOW】

Legally grown marijuana is subject to high taxes and high entry fees.
In recent years, there has been a wave of dealers selling illegally produced marijuana at lower prices, and many arrests have been made.

Governor Gavin Newsom eliminated the “grow tax” on growers earlier this year, but the county will still impose its own statewide grow tax.
Since legal marijuana growers are subject to this “cultivation tax,” you can see that legal marijuana on the market is never a cheap price to pay.

This cultivation tax is said to average 34-35%, although the percentage varies from state to state.

A 35% tax should be very costly!

So if vendors have to price their products while considering this 35% tax, it is likely that the products will be sold for a more reasonable amount of money.

“When considered in comparison to the number of legalized grow sites in the state , 70% or even more than 80% of the marijuana in dispensaries is grown illegally.” commented the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department.

In short, what I am trying to say is that CBD sellers and importers should not trust the distributors.

It is always important to know “whose fields the marijuana comes from and in which state”.

At present, Green Rush is a multi-trillion dollar market in the United States.
It is expected to enter the medical, cosmetic, and health industries as more and more studies are being conducted.
And as marijuana is being legalized in many places, the illicit marijuana market is also expected to grow proportionately.

Indeed, illegal field cultivation is very helpful from a supplier’s point of view because it is cheap and available.

So it is important to know that there are many dangers in the green rush world, even in California, the most top-ranked state in the world.

Such news has been coming out in the U.S. in recent years, and there was a special feature on it yesterday, for your information.

And no doubt there will be more news about it in the near future…
